My blogging break has been refreshing and now I'm excited to hop back into things by joining Winging It's "Seven Snippets from Unschooling". This is a weekly meme for unschoolers and relaxed homeschoolers to share what's happening in our parts of the life-learning world. Here are our seven highlights from last week:
-1-
For a couple of weeks Gerrick has been really busy designing vehicles with his Car Design Studio kit.
-2-
He read two books about a cat named Jenny Linsky. He finished Jenny and the Cat Club in two days and said it was the best book he's ever read. After finishing it, he started The Hotel Cat and, though he said it wasn't quite as good, he still finished it in three days! He would take breaks and tell me (and/or Rick) all about what was happening in the books. Though I take a lot of inspiration from Charlotte Mason homeschooling methods, I rarely request narration because it often happens so naturally!
-3-
He also spent a lot of time playing with LEGOs. He likes to build Star Wars ships based on ideas he gets from his book Star Wars Complete Cross-Sections: The Spacecraft and Vehicles of the Entire Star Wars Saga. He's saving money for some actual Star Wars kits and has been watching some of Legoman7777's reviews on youtube to help him make his purchasing decisions.

We recently bought two new bird feeders, so we've been doing a lot of bird watching, particularly while sitting at the kitchen table for meals and snacks.
I saw our first hummingbird of the season, so I found the feeder and made some homemade hummingbird food for it. Gerrick was curious about the ingredients and asked why the food sold in stores is red. This led to (more) good discussion about artificial food dyes, which we avoid.
Rick also made a bluebird house. (Gerrick wasn't interested in helping, but at least he sees that his dad is doing handy stuff, which I totally believe counts for something.)

A couple of months ago I had a conversation with a few other moms about teaching math basics in which I said something like, "I have a hard time imagining that most children would just start spontaneously mutliplying." And what do you think happened this week? You got it. Gerrick started spontaneously mutliplying! I was making lunch and he said, "If you had two 2s that would make 4. Two 3s would be 6. Two 4s would be 8. Two 5s would be 10. Two 10s would be 20. Two 20s would be 40. Two 40s would be 80. Two 100s would be 200. Two 0's would be 0." I stood there stunned. And then I just smiled. I am so grateful that he has had the opportunity to develop an understanding of the concept of multiplication before being asked to memorize facts.
-7-
He lost two teeth this week (his 3rd/4th)! He pulled one himself on Tuesday night. The second loose tooth was accidentally knocked out with a Wii steering wheel during a rambunctious game of Mario Kart on Friday night.
The content of this post was approved by Gerrick, as will be all future posts concerning him.
I'm so excited to be blogging again--I've even re-opened comments!
