Seven Snippets (7.21.12)

The baby bluebirds left the bird house this week!
One had a tough time learning to fly.

I have pinterest boards for some of Gerrick's interests and whenever I happen upon something I think he may like, I pin it.  I recently pinned this 6-minute PBS video about Lego Art to his lego board.  He found it early this week and really enjoyed it--even showed it to Rick later when he got home from work.

I think the video really inspired him, because he built a lot (even more than usual) with legos this week.  Here is just one of his many creations; I like that his crane operator has pink hair:

We also went to the Lego Store this week to "Join in the Lego Lord of the Rings quest for the ring."  Gerrick built a sword and then walked around the store searching for a dozen  Uruk-hai placed in various lego scenes around the store.  Once he found all 12, he was to search for a picture of Frodo with the ring in the pick-a-brick wall.  Finding Frodo completed his mission and then he was given a nice sheet of Lego Lord of the Rings stickers and we were entered in a raffle for a LOTR set.  (Download the Lego Store calendar for your nearest store to find events like this.) (P.S. You don't get to keep the sword; they cost something like $6.)

After the Lego Store, we spent a couple of hours at park day, which is conveniently close to the mall.
(I don't often snap photos at park days, but I couldn't pass this one up!)

I have been saving supplement bottles to make Gerrick a magic potion apothecary set, using free printable Harry Potter potion labels.  This week I made the first few, and he has had so much fun pretending with them!

We enjoyed a puppet performance of A Midsummer Night's Dream at the Nashville Library.

After picking up our new books from the hold shelf,  we went to meet friends at The Frist Center for the Visual Arts.  We viewed the latest exhibits and spent some time in the ArtQuest Gallery.  Gerrick was in more of a "viewing art" mood than a "making art" mood, but he did draw a small wild pig:

Since I didn't get a photo of the kids together, I'll share this cool scratch art drawing made by Gerrick's friend Ella of her younger sister, Gerrick, and herself:

After leaving The Frist, we walked across the street to Christ Church Cathedral.  When we recently read about gothic cathedrals in A Child's History of the World, Gerrick added "see a gargoyle on a building" to his bucket list.  We are lucky to have this beautiful building in Nashville, and today was a perfect opportunity to hunt for gargoyles!  He was very excited to spot several.

Just hitting the highlights may make it seem like we were busy, busy, busy and constantly on the go.  In reality, we were home all week except for Wednesday afternoon and all day Friday.  We had four mornings of lessons and plenty of free time.  I have found that for us (for now) one and a half days out per (M-F) week is the perfect home/outing balance, so that's what we very intentionally always try to plan.

Have a great week!
