About a year ago Gerrick asked about weaving and how it's done. I happened to have a Potholder Deluxe Kit in the closet. I had bought it with plans to put it under the tree that Christmas, but since the interest was there, I decided to give it to him then. I showed him how to put the cotton loops on the loom, then I demonstrated the weaving procedure with two loops. He then weaved two loops with quite a bit of frustration and was done; he placed it on a shelf where it has stayed all this time. This week he decided to finish it. It was interesting to see how much easier it was for him this time. He's really proud of his potholder; we are using it as a coaster. He says he may make a whole set.

The monthly meeting of the homeschool history club was this week. The theme was archeology and the children actually got to participate in an on-site dig! Gerrick found a door's lock plate, which apparently was one of the coolest things found.

We saw Kit Kittredge: An American Girl, the only movie Gerrick wants to see this summer at Regal's summer film festival. I thought it was a really good movie. Gerrick goes back and forth. Since it is set during the Great Depression, there is a good bit of sadness throughout the movie, but it does end on a high note. He had some really great questions afterward and we discussed some of the movie's themes including, particularly, money and prejudices.
He has also been reading A Thief in the Theater (A Kit Mystery), which he chose at the library last week. He says the book is boring, yet he wants to finish it. Based on some of the things he's said, I think it's been interesting for him to see some of the same characters in the book as in the movie, and I'm sure the movie helped him understand the setting of the book better.

Have a great week!
He pulled out all his Richard Scarry books this week.
He read the most from What Do People Do All Day?

One morning over breakfast he dramatically gave this awesome little soliloquy, which I immediately wrote down afterward:
I'm a which--not a witch, but a which. I choose which words people use and I eat the ones they don't use. I've been captured and put in a dungeon because people think I am a witch, but I don't mind. I like it down here. There are lots of question marks and exclamation points here, and they taste even better than words!
He said that it was from The Phantom Tollbooth, a library book Rick read to him months ago. I guess it was on his mind because he recently decided this is the book he wants to get when he turns in his Barnes & Noble summer reading form.

We took advantage of a gorgeous day with temperatures in the upper 70s by taking our books and a blanket to a nearby park. After reading a bit and working on math skills, we explored the area and hiked a new-to-us trail. We even observed a beaver carcass! When we came home we read a little about beavers online and watched Beavers on Netflix. I asked if he wanted to see if we had anything about beavers in our books and he declined. I looked myself and just left the books on the floor open to the beaver pages. The next morning he went straight to them.

"Meats! Meats! No maggoty bread!" If I heard this once this week, I heard some variance of it twenty times! Yes, he is still immersed in Lord of the Rings. Rick is still reading The Fellowship of the Ring every night. Just about every evening this week he has watched part of the trilogy. (Netflix/DVDs/video games are not an option in our house on weekdays until 4 p.m.) He's also been drawing or writing in his "Secret Book of Knowledge"--which is what he calls his moleskine notebook that no one is allowed to see (not even me!). I just happened to see him spread out in his bedroom floor with it and his movie companion books, intently copying something. He has been busy building Isengard in one corner of his bedroom as well as a camp outside Fangorn Forest in another part of the room. He even made some tree stumps!
Have a great week!
