Grayton Beach '11 (Day Five)

An earlier day, all three of us saw one of these jellyfish floating near us in the gentle, clear waves.
Though Gerrick missed it, Rick and I also saw a stingray (about 12-14" diameter) swim by us!

We were absolutely thrilled to see dolphins swimming parallel to shore on the morning of day four!
There were maybe a total of 10-12.  They were swimming so fast that I couldn't get a good photo.  On this morning, however, I saw two moving at a more leisurely pace and was able to snap a photo of one.
Seeing dolphins swim in their natural habitat was magical.

I wonder who banded this cute little bird's legs.

We were able to see lots of  large crabs throughout our visit since the water was so clear.

A few of my favorite finds--I have never before found so much cool stuff at the beach.

Good-bye, beach.

Good-bye, little cabin.
We look forward to returning.

Grayton Beach '11 (Day Four)

Yes, those dark storm clouds eventually pushed us off the beach.  We spent some time on our screened-in porch during the thunderstorm.  Rick carved; I read; Gerrick did some drawing in his nature journal.  When the thunder and lightning passed, he did a little exploring behind the cabin.

We were able to go back to the beach before dark.  There wasn't a beautiful sunset due to the lingering cloud coverage, but we all saw a large sea turtle swimming parallel to the shore in the crystal-clear water!  Unfortunately, I wasn't able to get a good photo, but I was able to walk along the beach with it for quite a ways before it headed back out to sea!  I wouldn't trade that amazing experience for any sunset!

Grayton Beach '11 (Day Three)

There were lots of sea slugs in the tide pool.

We ended up finding four of these skulls!

Grayton Beach '11 (Day Two)

Adding a wall to someone's abandoned castle to help defend against the tide.

Grayton Beach '11 (Day One)

We checked into our cabin and were on the beach at Grayton Beach State Park by 4:00 p.m.
I can't think of a better way to end a long day spent in the car.

Nature Connections (09.11)

We just got back home from the Gulf Coast late last night.  I'll post many more pictures from our wonderful vacation later, but here is a shot of one of the toads Gerrick examined outside our rental cabin.

Gravity I: The Earth's Gravity (BFSU D-1)

Day 1

Gerrick read...

Which way is down?
No matter how high you lift one side of the ruler, gravity still pulls the paperclip straight down.

After completing this demonstration, I was pleasantly surprised when Gerrick spontaneously said,
"Mama, we found out that the center of the earth is down, no matter what part of the earth you are on."

Drip Painting
We used one part tempera paint to one part water in squirt bottles
and an old board we had in the garage.

Day 2

I read aloud...

Online game:  Quack's Apples
We also discussed which of his iPod games simulate gravity:
Cut the Rope, Angry Birds, Paper Toss...

Challenge:  Create a marble run sculpture.

Day 3

Gerrick read...

Challenge:  Build a water wall (in the shower).

I helped by cutting bottles and tearing tape as he directed.
He turned his water wall into a shower for a rubber ducky.

Day 4

Gerrick read...

 Drop Painting
We used watered-down tempera paints and a medicine dropper.
