Have You Heard?...

Reading Rainbow has come to an end! The reasons just make me sick. Never has Gerrick watched an episode of this show without requesting at least one specific book from the library. No other show has made him consistently ask for books! I am so sad. You can listen to the story on NPR if you haven't already heard.

10/2011 UPDATE:  Great news!  Reading Rainbow episodes are now available to view free on Vimeo, here.

  2. Yup. I read it somewhere earlier this week and it is just so sad. This show was always wonderful encouragement for children to read.

If ANY show deserves to have its broadcast rights renewed, it's "Reading Rainbow."

  3. Oh no! I even have the Reading Rainbow theme song as my ring for when the library calls me to let me know that the books I requested are being helf for me. So sad!

  4. I HAD heard this. And it is so sad. Emphasize phonics without the LOVE of the books? HUH? Where's the MOTIVATION to read. Why am I reading anyway? To get my hands on those great RR books! :-)

  6. I watched that show as a kid. I loved it! My oldest watched it too. His brother is still a bit young for it but we were planning on it again. So sad. I'll have to google the reasons for pulling it.

  7. Wow,
Thank you for bringing this to attention. Really disappointing. The motivation behind this is so wrong.

  11. Really. Are they serious?

It will be interesting to see what really fantastic wonderful educationally perfect (note the sarcasm) shows come to take its place.

  13. That is so sad. I used to love Reading Rainbow. The reasons are insane. Kids will learn to read when they WANT to read that great book.

  14. So, so sad. It's unbelievable that TV stars are paid $ 1,000,000 per episode to star on a sitcom but no one will put up the $$$ to keep a show like this one on the air.

    Unbelievable.

Maybe Ashton Kutcher can get his Twitter minions to donate $1 each--that'd pay the bill.

  15. *sigh* I know you saw my post about it too...I am SO angry and bitter about it...I mean, seriously? Of ALL the shows that PBS decides they don't have money for?!
I was pretty upset over Mister Rogers leaving, but this one really takes the cake. I COMPLETELY agree w/ Wendy..."If ANY show deserves to have it's broadcast rights renewed, it's Reading Rainbow"...I am truly floored by this decision at PBS...they are the ONLY station that I even let DS watch, and now even they are going downhill :(
