Backyard Volcano

Gerrick has wanted this Playmobil set for some time now. He doesn't really care about the dinosaurs; he has plenty of cheap dinosaurs that he enjoys. What he's been craving is that volcano. I'm a big fan of Playmobil. We have a lot of their toys, and their customer service is amazing! But there is absolutely no way I'm paying $39.99 for this particular set. So today after discussing how many weeks' allowance he would have to save to buy it himself, he scratched it off his wish list, and we made our own. I'm sure there are many ways to make a fancier volcano. I just grabbed what we had on hand: a lid to a 5-gallon bucket with a peanut butter jar hot-glued to it and air-drying clay...

...and of course, baking soda and vinegar.

He agreed that this is much cooler than a piece of plastic that lights up. :)

  3. Funny, I have been planning a volcano project myself because my son is fascinated by them since we read a book about Volcanoes. Great project!

  4. That's such a good hands on project! Plus I love the idea of making it yourself instead of buying the expensive playset.

  6. That is really cool! We played with our playmobile nativity set today. Yeah...the Christmas one. How much clay did you use? Was it a 5lb pack?

  7. We got the 25lb bag of clay that I linked to above for Christmas. I would say we probably used about 7-8 pounds for this project.
